Water Displacement
Project type
Science
Date
March 2026
Objectives
I wanted to facilitate an experience in which children are able to explore concepts such as water displacement in their own words. Such as supporting them throughout the experience by asking them open any questions and encouraging thought processes and vocabulary:
" What is happening to the water when you put your hand in it?"
older children will respond " The water goes out"
" The water came out of the beaker when you put your hand in it the water was displaced"
Other objectives include turn taking trading and fine motor manipulation of beakers
Reflection
It went well, the children were pouring water from one beaker to another, they were asking questions and answering my open-ended questions to prompt their thinking. In the future, I would like to use water without soap at first then branch out into other science concepts such as volume with soapy water.
This is where science and play combine, recalling the children's interests in water play: I brought beakers of different sizes. During this activity, I encouraged the children to pour water into a large beaker then guess and discover what happens to the water if they put their arm to toy inside.
